Start out in the morning from your accommodation in Siem Reap and travel by air-conditioned car to Battambang, the rice bowl of Cambodia. Pass through traditional villages and countryside on a two-hour drive. Stop at the famous 'Black Man Statue' roundabout, locally known as 'Ta Dumbong Kva Nhoung Shrine' in the centre of Battambang. Learn the legend behind the statue. Next, visit Wat Somrong Knong Killing Field, where it is estimated that around ten thousand people were executed in the Temple Grounds by the Khmer Rouge. Wander around the beautifully designed stupa monument that has interesting stories and information in English around the base. Afterward, take a bamboo train ride and walk across the Hanging Suspension Bridge before visiting the Peace Gallery. This is a space for reflection and learning about Cambodia's journey from war towards peace and reconciliation, presenting the country's complicated history while celebrating the work of Cambodian peacebuilders. Then, enjoy a well deserved lunch break. After lunch, visit Phnom Sampov Lookout, and Killing Caves. This hilltop area is worth a wander around to take in the impressive views of the countryside and city from the top. Discover the temple complex and the numerous monkeys. Close by is one of the infamous Khmer Rouge Killing Caves, which is the next stop. Take the steps down into the cave and pay tribute at the monument that is in the cave, with the remains of some victims carefully preserved. The final stop, and highlight of the day, is the famous Bat Cave. Witness the cloud of bats flying from their cave at dusk before heading back to Siem Reap.
